I discovered Social Hiking through Google+. I had been planning to purchase a spot 2,
so family and friends could track my walk on the internet, but with social hiking you can do so much more. (Spot 3 has been released overseas).
Social Hiking aggregates your position, photos and tweets (as well as other media) and links them to a position on a map. It allows people to contact you with relevant information to your position maybe to inform you of a bushfire, or to tell you about a side excursion with a wonderful view.
The idea is being developed in the UK where the telephone coverage must be better than Australia and they use their phones as gps devices with the appropriate apps.
To take advantage of Social Hiking, I am now going to buy a spot connect which allows you to message outside of mobile coverage areas. To add value to my walk I now have to develop a communication stratergy.
